SEPTEMBER 22 TO 29, 2003 - 1st INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON

DIRECT ACTION TO

END THE WAR ON DRUGS

The first international conference on using direct action to end the war on drugs will be held in Darwin, Northern Territory Australia from Monday September 22nd - Monday September 29th 2003, to coincide with the 2nd annual Darwin Syringe Festival.

The aim of the conference is to bring together activists from around the world to discuss new strategies in campaigning for drug law reform. However, we recognise that the 'War On Drugs' is not aimed at eradicating drug use but is actually a war on drug users, a war on the Third World, a race war and a class war. There can be no serious discussion about drug law reform or 'harm minimisation' without taking this into account.

The conference organisers also feel that the results of many approaches such as lobbying government or service provision have not gone far enough in either changing community attitudes or drug laws. It is time for the movement to reexamine the tactics it is using, which is the reason for the conferences focus on direct action.

The conference is currently in the initial planning stages and we are seeking volunteers to be involved in both local and international planning comities. If you are interested in volunteering or if you have any suggestions or questions please contact darwinsyringefestival@yahoo.com or (in Australia) phone 0415 16 2525.

We are also encouraging people to present workshops on any topics related to the War On Drugs, particularly around first hand campaigning experiences and strategies. If you want to present a workshop you can submit an abstract here.
